At Excelsior, the athletics program is given as much emphasis as the academic and social-emotional components are given. As we educate the whole child,we must emphasize physical fitness in our educational program.
When a child finds success on the field or court, the success can translate to higher motivation in the classroom. Physical education allows students opportunities to develop in many ways. Evidence of physical development is shown in the areas of agility, flexibility, strength, endurance, and fitness. Evidence of mental development can be found in increased mental agility, flexibility, motivation, confidence, and thought processes. Evidence of social development can be found in the areas of cooperation, teamwork, responsibility, respect, trust, and positive relationships.
Physical education classes are structured courses in which students receive credits for their participation, effort, completion of assignments, and teamwork. Each class consists of activities designed to meet the needs of students with unique learning profiles. These classes include learning new skills, practicing the basics of the skills, and applying the skills to games and other activities.
The theme for our athletics program is "Pride and Effort." Athletes and coaches alike are expected to take pride in their school, their team, and themselves, respect each other, practice good sportsmanship, and to put forth maximum effort in all activities.
The athletics program consists of three levels of participation: physical education classes, intramural sports, and interscholastic sports.
